Designing Websites, Reading Books and Making Money Online

David Oliveira · 18/10/2020 · Leave a Comment

This week I spent a lot of time designing websites, promoted my partner’s business (Thermomix) and hosted a dinner party.

week 42

What have you done? Anything interesting?

I’ve decided to retire right now and I’m only 31. You probably thinking that I went nuts. But I assure you, I’m feeling very sane. In fact, I would say it’s the best idea that I have ever had.

Is that a crazy idea? Read my blog post, where I explain where this idea came from.

What am I reading?

Almost finished the “The 4-Hour Work Week”.

An awesome book by Timothy Ferriss. It shows how it is possible to reduce the workload and make money; in fact, more money while living like a rich, successful person. Isn’t that the dread of everyone you know? It’s my dream for sure. I want to achieve at least 50% of what is said in the book. Do you think I can do it designing websites?

What am I working on?

I am creating a list of affiliate programs to help bloggers generate passive income and I’m working on a podcast that will hopefully launch in 2021.

Affiliate programs are one of the best ways to generate income for bloggers. Basically, bloggers recommend products and services (just like “The 4-Hour Work Week” book above) and when you click on a link and purchase a product, bloggers may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

That’s it for this week.

My Wishlist Is Now Inpaciently Waiting For You

David Oliveira · 22/01/2022 · Leave a Comment

Just in case you decide to be really cool, I’ll leave here my wishlist. Feel free to give me just one of the items. They’re not in a special order.

Updated: January 2022

week 46 - wishlist

Kindle Paperwhite

I love reading. I always have. All people I admire are readers too.

Up until recently, I was one of those people saying that there is nothing like a paperback or a hardback book. Now I am starting to think differently. As I learn about minimalism, decluttering and become aware of how important is to live a sustainable life, I’ve decided that I want to try using a Kindle.

A Promised Land

I have not read a lot about the former president, Barack Obama, but I have a feeling that he has great stories to tell. After all, becoming the first black president in US history must mean something.

In this book, Obama reveals the details of his inspiring story. The former president tells us how he went from a young man to the most powerful and influential man in the world. Details of his education and personal life are all in the book too.

Rich Dad Poor Dad

I see awesome entrepreneurs recommending this book all the time and now I am suffering from FOMO (fear of missing out). Silly, right?

The truth is, I love personal development books.

I will definitely read Rich Dad Poor Dad, just not sure when.

FACT

Did you know that you too can have a wishlist on Amazon and make it public? It’s an awesome way to let your friends and family know what you’d like to receive on your next birthday or this year on Christmas. You should try it.

Know Your Numbers

Do you have any idea how much you’ve spent last month on leisure, takeaways or clothing? Most people answer no to this question. If you answered yes then congratulations, you’re on the right path.

How much money did you spend on entertainment last month? I challenge you to stop for a minute and think about this. Try really hard. Entertainment isn’t just going to the movies. You should consider streaming subscriptions (Netflix, Sky TV, Prime), gaming and even your phone bill (where you spend time on social media platforms).

We all spend money on so many unnecessary things. I know, we cannot stop spending completely, but here’s an example. My children asked me to subscribe to Disney+, which I agreed to because it seemed a cool thing to have, but do they really use it enough to justify the cost?

Knowing exactly how much you earn vs how much you spend, is your first lesson to build wealth.

Make it a habit. Nowadays banks do this for you. Just explore your banking app and I am sure you’ll find some sort of expense tracking system. Alternatively, you can install a budget planner from your app store and get started sooner rather than later.

Try Starling Bank

I really like using Starling to track both my expenses and set money aside.

Open a bank account with them to see it for yourself. The cool thing about the Starling app is that you can create saving spaces (similar to a sub-account) and move money to those spaces either manually or automatically. It works really well. You can even create goals and specify what is the target amount for each of the spaces you created.

Personally, I have different saving spaces for Holidays, Deposit (for another house), Home Emergencies (for when my boiler or my washing machine go to heaven), Taxes (an estimate of my next tax bill). Every time I use my card, the app rounds up the change to the nearest pound and sends it to one of the saving spaces. I just love it.

Build Wealth by Saving Money

What about savings? How much did you save last month? Also a difficult question, right? How come you’re interested in building wealth, but you don’t know how much you’ve saved last month?

Saving money is the #1 rule of the "build wealth" game. Click To Tweet

How many rich people do you know? I know a few and they save money and track their expenses. To what they do, because it works.

Simply open a Savings Account and set up a weekly or monthly standing order.

Avoid Expensive Debt

Yes! I know you know what I mean.

Having a mortgage? That’s totally fine. Ten mortgages, even better. The problem is your credit card, your Littlewoods account, your Very account. All debts that have an interest rate over or 5% are bad.

Like, really bad. Pay of your credit and store cards asap.

Financial Education = Build Wealth Faster

You can and should use your credit card – it improves your credit score, but you should always, always pay it in full. Never use more than 15% of your credit card limit. The credit score companies don’t like that.

It’s so important that you start building good financial habits.

I always ask, why they don’t teach this stuff at school? My son is learning about all the different religions around the world and the Egyptians. Wouldn’t be better to learn how to budget and how to create a business plan?

Here’s an idea. Read books. Read as many relevant books as you can so that you become an expert. It could any field. Pick a topic of your interest and become an expert. As you read you’ll notice that learning will become one of your best skills. Start reading Personal Finance Books and you’ll become an expert in personal finance too.

Another idea. Watch YouTube videos. I like watching Project Life Mastery and Mark Tilbury, they are an awesome source of inspiration for me. There is a lot to learn with Warren Buffett too, he is one of the wealthiest men in the world.

Rich Dad Poor Dad

What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money
That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not

Rich Dad Poor Dad is the #1 personal finance book of all time.

BUY ON AMAZON

Discipline Will Help You Build Wealth

If you want to build wealth, you must discipline yourself.

Think about what really matters and about your goals before you decide to take the day off to binge watch your next series on Amazon Prime.

Start a business and stick to it.

Save money and avoid useless shopping. Think about it. Do you really need the latest mobile phone every year? Do you really need a brand new car? You do not.

As you build up the habit of saving money, you’ll notice that it gives you joy and that saving money makes you feel good. The more you save, the more you’ll enjoy doing it. You’ll see your account grow bigger and bigger.

It’s awesome

Try to save at least 10% of your income. Once you’ve saved enough to support your life for at least 6 months, start investing.

Start Investing Early

Every month I deposit money into eToro, Wealthify, CrowdProperty and Penfold. There are other platforms where I invest money, but these are my favourites. For me, the trick is to have these deposits automated. Because the money leaves my account at the same time as my mortgages and other bills, it doesn’t feel like I had the option to not make these investments.

The earlier you start investing the better.

What if you can’t save money?

I know that for most people saving money is really difficult. Do you know why? Most people don’t know how to spend money. When it comes to leisure and unnecessary items, you should only spend the money that you don’t need. You should save and then spend it, not the opposite.

If you find it hard to save money, then it’s time to think about starting a side hustle to make some extra money in your spare time.

I do that too. Start here.

Now tell me, has any of the above helped you? If so, please leave a comment below to start a conversation. I hope you manage to achieve all your goals in life.

Passive Income Ideas You Must Consider Right Now

David Oliveira · 04/12/2021 · Leave a Comment

Hey, are you into passive income? Today I’m writing about some passive income ideas that really work. Hopefully, this article will help you.

passive income ideas

Just in case you’re wondering, it is possible to earn money with passive income.

Many people do, including me.

However, it’s important to understand that passive income is not the same as easy money. You still need to work (in most cases) before you start earning passive income. There’s no such thing as easy money (unless you win the lottery).

What is passive income?

Put effort into something that will then reward you multiple times, for a long period of time. Here are a few examples of passive income:

  • Authors write books and then receive a percentage of the sales profits.
  • Landlords purchase properties and then rent them out.
  • Investors purchase stocks and then collect dividends.

Passive Income Ideas

I will now give you some ideas of what you can do to start generating passive income too. It’s not that hard, believe me. If I can do it, you can too.

1. Youtube

Youtube is one of the most popular ways of generating passive income, but remember, you need to work, it really isn’t “easy” money. However, a video that you create today, will potentially generate income for years to come.

It’s easy to start a Youtube channel. All you need really is a mobile phone and some spare time. Many people don’t even show their faces on the videos that they publish. You just need to create content. There is an audience for everything, so your videos don’t have to be funny or intellectual.

But how do you make money with YouTube?

Your videos, like all videos on YouTube, will generate revenue with ads. Simple.

It takes a long time for most YouTubers to start making money, so bear in mind that persistence is the key here. If you’re not willing to put the hours in, there is no point in even getting started.

If you decide to start a YouTube channel, you also need to make the decision of doing for a while. I suggest you create at least 200 videos before you even consider stopping it. No content, no rewards.

Remember, you’ll have to work, but you’ll collect the rewards later. Multiple times, for a long period of time.

I can’t say for sure what’s the future of YouTube but let’s try to be positive and think that any videos uploaded now, will be live for many years to come.

Now, I know that YouTube is not for everybody. Maybe you don’t want to make YouTube videos, and that is totally fine. There are plenty of other passive income ideas to consider.

Property Investments

Real estate is one of the most lucrative ways of generating passive income.

It’s difficult to get started because you’ll need a large sum of money for the deposit, but once you have your first buy-to-let (BTL), you can pay an agency to manage your property and you don’t have to do a thing.

You can own the house for 10, 20 or even 30 years and receive rental income for all that time. I personally receive over £16,000 per year in rental income.

What’s better than that? There really are some passive income ideas that work and help lots of people make real money.

Amazon Affiliate Program

The Amazon Affiliate Program can also be a great source of income, passive income. You may need to learn a little bit about affiliate marketing first but is totally worth it. Some websites make millions per month with this technique alone.

EXAMPLE:
Over 5 years ago, I shared an Amazon affiliate link on my social media. It was a weird device that makes cats go away (my neighbour at the time had too many cats). When people click on that link and makes a purchase on the Amazon website, I receive a commission. The cool thing is that every now and again I still receive commissions from that link.

How to promote Amazon links and make money?

Once you’re registered with their affiliate program, you’ll be able to create and share links for each product/page on their website. Those links are yours only. That’s how they know to should receive the referral commission.

All you have to do is to share those links everywhere you can.

  • Create YouTube videos and add the links on the description.
  • Share the links on all your social media accounts.
  • Create lots of Pinterest images and point them to your Amazon links.
  • Write blog posts with product reviews.

Invest in Stocks

Recently I started investing in eToro. It’s a social investment platform that lets you copy experienced investors. Perfect for you, if you’re just starting out.

Best Ways to Invest and How I Do It Successfully

The earlier you start building a stock portfolio, the better. Most stocks value fluctuate but in the long term, generally speaking, stocks increase in price.

Patience is key.

You can start small, let’s say £50, and top-up your account every month with another £50. One year later you could potentially have £600 invested, and if you do well, £600 could turn into £1000 or even more in the following couple of years.

Some companies will pay you dividends, which is nothing less than pure passive income. That’s awesome, right?

ALERT

Cash itself does not increase in value unless you put it to use. Please do not let your money sit in your current account because inflation is on the rise. Stagnant money actually decreases in value, but you have got to be smart. Make informed decisions when it comes to investing your money.

Saving Accounts

At the very least, move your money to a savings account. Not the greatest form of passive income, but at least you’ll receive some interest, which is definitely better than nothing.

Some savings accounts pay as much as 2% interest.

I suggest you develop the habit of saving money. Start with 10% of income or if you can 20%. Save some and invest some.

Final Toughts

I genuinely enjoy talking about passive income ideas. Some are beginner’s level, some are a little bit more difficult, but the point is, start somewhere and learn as much as you can about it. Only great things can happen when you get started.
