Children Are Losing One Year Of School, But Who Cares?

David Oliveira · 23/01/2021 · Leave a Comment

I’m not the type of person who goes around ranting about our government, but the fact that children are losing so much makes me feel very anxious.

By Klimkin on Pixabay.

I’m just a dad. A concerned dad.

I have two little boys, Marcus is 5 and Nicholas is 7. They’re both great but have very distinct personalities.

Nicholas is shy and quiet. He enjoys learning, loves reading and is very curious about everything.

Marcus is naughty and laud. He’s very creative but doesn’t particularly like to learn English and Maths. He prefers art and sports.

Children are losing a year of school, but who cares?

I do, and if you’re a parent, you’re probably are concerned too.

Coronavirus is affecting children’s education.

In March 2020, many schools across the country closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, including my children’s school.

Some schools went above and beyond to support the kids by adapting to the new era and finding alternative ways to continue supporting children.

Zoom classes.

Daily videos.

Facebook groups.

Phone calls.

No!

Nicholas and Marcus got none of that.

Why? Don’t ask me.

I tried to contact the school several times regarding the issue but they can only say that they are doing the best they can with the resources that they have.

Children are losing one year of school!

All my son’s school is providing are some PDFs and YouTube videos.

Many of the PDF’s are useless once printed. Some because of the dark images over text, some because the text is way too small to read and many because contain very long links. We can’t click on links when they are on paper, can we?

It’s so frustrating!

When the first lockdown finished, my kids took all the printed worksheets and brought them to school to show their teachers. They refused and told them to take them back.

This time they’re asking us to take pictures of the completed worksheets and send them by email on a daily basis. Also not that easy when both my partner and I are still working.

Anyway, I just want to make sure the kids don’t lose too much.

Many kids still attend school because their parents are key workers. Those kids are surely developing at a greater pace than my kids. My concern is that when my children come back to school they will be way behind compared to those who are allowed to attend school.

I’m doing my best to teach them and support them at home, but is that enough?

I believe that they will be affected, not for a short period of time but for years to come. It will take a long time until they recover all that they’ve lost this year.

Amazon can help!

I found a few books that might help both mine and your children.

The Hidden Agenda Of Christmas 2020

David Oliveira · 27/12/2020 · Leave a Comment

This year Christmas was definitely different, not only for me but for millions of people around the globe. Who would have thought that in 2020 the world would be chaos?

Chaos? Yes.

Probably the best way of describing 2020 to the next generations.

CHAOS: Complete disorder and confusion.

I don’t need to go into detail here. Specially because I don’t like talking about controversial subjects:

  • Politics
  • COVID-19
  • Brexit

I feel like there are enough opinionated articles available online. My 20 pence wouldn’t add any value to it or help you get the answers you’re looking for.

Opinions are just opinions, unless you know what you’re talking about.

I miss going on holiday!

Last year I visited my dad in Switzerland for the first time. He has been living there for over 10 years. How come I never visited before? It’s a beautiful place. The picture below was taken just behind is house. Can you imagine waking up every day to that view? It’s amazing. It’s refreshing.

April 2019 in Saint-Maurice, Switzerland.

Christmas 2020

This year Christmas felt different.

I had a normal dinner with my family but due to COVID-19, I didn’t go to Christmas markets, didn’t visit any shops and didn’t go out for a nice meal.

I hope you’re doing well. This week I was diagnosed with coronavirus, but don’t worry, I’m fine.

I Got Diagnosed With Coronavirus

This was definitely not the funniest week of the year. That is because I was diagnosed with COVID-19, and so was Anna and Nicholas, my oldest son.
We are all doing okay but being at home in isolation becomes boring pretty quickly.
I wrote a blog post about it.

I’ve also started a list of my favourite tools & resources.
I use them for blogging, but some are useful for my personal life. Check it out.

I Just Got Diagnosed With Coronavirus – What Now?

David Oliveira · 25/11/2020 · Leave a Comment

I’m writing this blog post because I’ve been diagnosed with COVID-19, and I feel like sharing my experience might help someone.

covid-19

I’m Fine

First, I’d like to say that I’m fine and that there is no reason to worry about my health condition.

The only symptoms I have at the moment are extreme tiredness and no sense of smell. Losing all sense of smell is the weirdest thing ever, but I’ll tell you more about that later.

Other than that, I feel okay.

What happened?

Last week Anna (my partner) told me that a family member got diagnosed with COVID-19. I asked what were the symptoms this family member had and Anna said that the only symptoms were lack of sense of smell and headaches.

I was at my dinner table, so my first instinct was to smell the candle that was in front of me.

It should smell like mango, but instead:

NOTHING

NO SMELL

ZERO

At this stage, I knew that something was up and that the most responsible thing to do was order a COVID-19 test, so I did.

Today, I got the test results: POSITIVE

Positive for me, for Anna and for Nicholas, my oldest son.

What now?

Well, now we all need to isolate, which is not easy an easy task because we’ll have to keep the kids entertained and I’m not great at that.

I have contacted the people that were in contact with me and have advised them to read the GOV guidance and isolate for 14 days.

Timeline

On Friday, 20 November I didn’t feel too well. In the evening, my throat was itchy and irritated.

On Saturday, 21 November, I realised that my sense of smell was completely gone, so I ordered a test.

On Monday, 23 November, I received my test through the post and sent it back straight away.

Today, 25 November, I received the test results.

Up until now, I have also suffered from extreme tiredness, headaches and muscular pain. No high temperature, I think.

NHS, WHO and GOV COVID-19 Guidance

I urge to follow the COVID-19 guidance that the relevant organisations give you.

That is, in my opinion, the only way we can fight coronavirus and hopefully see better days.

Surprisingly Viral Week

David Oliveira · 22/11/2020 · Leave a Comment

So far this has been a normal and boring week, except for the fact that today I’ve started isolating. Why a viral week? Because I was in contact with someone that has tested positive for COVID-19.

COVID-19 is real this viral week.

Earlier this week I was in contact with someone that yesterday tested positive for COVID-19. The result? I’ve got to isolate for 2 weeks.

I could easily pretend that it never happened but I think that we all have to act responsibly in a situation like this. Not isolating could mean spread the virus to other people. I don’t want to be responsible for someone’s death.

I’m I being too dramatic? I don’t think so. The reason why the world is going through all of this is that people don’t take COVID-19 seriously. I hear people saying that they don’t believe in any of this. How is that even possible when people are dying?

My children will be isolated with me. What would be the consequences of letting them go to school? Their peers could catch the virus, take it home and infect other families – a snowball effect.

How am I feeling?

I want to believe that I’m just being paranoid but the truth is that my sense of smell is gone. I also feel extremely tired and I have a cough, not a new continuous cough. For precaution, I ordered a COVID-19 test. It will come through the post in the next couple of days. I’ll update you all when the result comes through.

We are all responsible.

In the meantime, I would like to ask you to think before you go out and about.

Do you really need to go out?

Can you work from home?

Can you do shopping online?

Please follow the WHO and NHS advice. That is the only way of controlling the current coronavirus outbreak.
